maybe i should switch to cash…

1 December 2009

so i just spent about an hour or so at $0.10/0.25 6 max on full tilt and enjoyed playing poker for the first time in a while. for any readers that might not quite understand that last sentence, $0.10/0.25 is in reference to the small blind/big blind (the money posted before the cards are dealt) and 6 max means that there are a maximum of 6 players on the table. the maximum buy-in for those limits is $25 or 100 big blinds.

i poured myself a jameson on the rocks, turned on some beatles via pandora, and played one table. i have a very small amount of money on full tilt, so sitting with $25 was a large portion of my bankroll on that site, however, i wasn’t concerned about making/losing money. i just wanted to have some fun. and fun was had.

i think there were many reasons why i actually enjoyed playing poker for first time in a long time tonight. i’ll make a quick list and then maybe expand on a few of the points at the end.

1. i was drinking.
2. i was enjoying some music.
3. i got to play cards i would never play in my normal games.
4. i got to make moves i would never make in my normal games.
5. i played one table and got to actually think about my plays.
6. i got to pick up reads on every player at the table.
7. it’s a different form of poker.

i think #5 was probably the biggest reason i enjoyed this session. my normal games are typically just all-in or fold. i would never think about 3 betting out of position with QJo (sorry…this would take a little more to explain) in a turbo sng. it would be ridiculous. but in a cash game, it can make perfect sense depending on the situation. i guess what it boils down to is that there are a lot more tools (or plays) at your disposal in cash games. it’s more enjoyable to go to a restaurant with more menu options rather than one that just serves grilled cheese sandwiches.

and why is it that the grilled cheese sandwiches are never on the menu?

so i think the lesson of today is to play more low limit cash games on full tilt. my friend l0bstam0bsta made a good point tonight that if i’m going to play so much poker and depend on it to pay my bills, i need to do something to keep it interesting. i won’t be doing this too often, but i’ll be doing it a bit more to try to keep things fresh.

now it’s time to join my best bud fattymcbones in some sweet call of duty action. latersville.
